Our Church & Upcoming Events
Sunday, October 5: We welcome Rev. Al Sharp to the pulpit again this year. Rev. Sharp is Executive Director of the Chicago-based Protestants for the Common Good (PCG) and returns to FCCW to share news of PCG’s current work, including the formation of the PCG Academy, an adult education and activism opportunity for retired adults.
Protestants for the Common Good was formed in 1995 to bring an informed and strong Protestant voice to public life and to offer educational resources and advocacy opportunities to people of faith on matters of public policy. Since that time, the organization has grown significantly in participants, budget, staff, reputation, and influence.
The central focus of PCG is to assist people to examine their responsibilities as citizens in the light of their religious faith. It does not attempt to dictate the religious or political beliefs of its members. Likewise, PCG believes that congregations as corporate entities should not be asked to take official positions on controversial, often partisan, public issues. To do so would imply that complex social policies constitute articles of faith. Particular political policies and programs must be given our attention but not be confused with the principle tenets of our faith tradition. For this reason, PCG urges individual Protestants who are active church members to join others in becoming PCG members but does not recruit churches as members. Congregations that utilize PCG educational resources and provide annual support for the organization can become "Educational Affiliates."
Our FCCW member Peter Baugher serves on PCG’s Board of Directors.

Sunday, October 5: Neighbors in Need Special Offering. Today, in addition to our regular offering, we will be collecting the UCC Neighbors in Need special offering. This offering supports the UCC ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. One-third of it supports the Council for American Indian Ministry, and the remainder is used by the UCC's Justice and Witness Ministries to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects. This year, the UCC asks us to imagine a world without poverty, hunger and injustice, and our response to this offering can help to make such a world a reality.
Communion Sunday, October 5 - Food Pantry Help: Please help the FCCW Mission Ministry provide food donations for Trinity Church Food Pantry, housed at Trinity Church in Wilmette. The Food Pantry helps many elderly residents and families in our community. The donations are needed every month, regardless of the season. In providing the pantry with a steady source of donations FCCW can support this important community service. They have a particular need for high-quality sources of protein, such as canned tuna and/or meats, and second, they do NOT have a use for candy and other sweets. Also, they appreciate regular (as opposed to family-sized, etc.) size cans because most of the customers of the food pantry are elderly couples or single people who can't use up the larger sized items. Please bring food donations to FCCW on Communion Sundays and place your donations in the atrium under the stairs.

All Saints’ Remembrance
Sunday, November 2, 2008
Each November 1, Christians throughout the world observe All Saints’ Day, a day of remembrance of our ancestors in faith. Each year at FCCW on the first Sunday of November, we remember all of those in our community and family who have died since the previous November. The names of our friends and loved ones are listed in our worship bulletin, we read their names aloud in a solemn liturgy, and in the chancel of the sanctuary a memorial candle burns in memory of each person. If you would like to include the name of a friend or loved one in the litany of remembrance this year, please contact Teresa Northcut in the Church Office no later than October 21, 2008. (847) 251-6660, ext. 10 or tnorthcut@fccw.org.
From the Ministry of Member Care: Member Care Coordinator of the Month The FCCW Ministry of Member Care assigns a Coordinator of the Month to assist church members with special needs such as rides to church, meals, or support in times of crisis. If you know of a member of the congregation who could use assistance, or if you know of a prayer concern, or if you have a need yourself, the Ministry of Member Care can help. Coordinator for the Month of October 2008 is Keith Ross.
